In yesterday’s post I introduced JULIUS THALER<\/strong><\/span> to you: An Austrian Lieutenant, 22a, who during wintertime 1942-43 spent <\/strong>some months on the island, as a Radar Operator on the #Kastellos<\/span> hill in the South.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He’s been kind enough to share his war memories from Greece with me, including this touching little story of his first love:<\/p>\n

One day he tore his coat on a barbed wire fence in Afi\u00e1rtis<\/strong> and looked for a seamstress to get it repaired. So next time, when he drove to refill the large watertank in Pig\u00e1dia, he was led to a house, where such help would be offered:
\nKYRIA ORFANOU<\/span>\u00a0and her two daughters, 19a and 17a,<\/strong> first received him veiled and suspicious. But the elder girl, FAN\u00cdTSA<\/span><\/strong>, was willing to do it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

While weeks went by, Julius<\/strong> was taught some Italian by his interpreter, CarloEbner<\/span><\/strong>, a baker from Bolzano, Alto Adige. So he got able to talk to the Karpathians, who were forced to learn that language at school!<\/p>\n

And when he finally went for his coat and chatted a bit with Fan\u00edtsa<\/span>,<\/strong> he felt that she liked him. Henceforth he payed her a visit each time after filling the watertank.<\/p>\n

She admired his “occhicelestini<\/span>“, his “lightblueeyes<\/span>“,<\/strong> they joked and laughed and enjoyed their young lives for many happy weeks.
\nThen, all of a sudden, on the morning of the 9th of March 1943<\/strong>, a phone call assigned him back to Crete with the next Junkers
\n“JU” on its stopover from Rhodes!<\/strong><\/p>\n

He rushed to Fan\u00edtsa<\/span> to bring her the news.<\/strong>
\nHer eyes became wide and tears ran down<\/strong>
\nher cheeks.<\/strong> They found no words in their sadness… She passed him a little foto of hers and signed its back with “Gi\u00e0 \u00e9nthymon! Fan\u00ed”, “In memory! Fan\u00ed”.<\/strong>
\nAnd then she gave him an ORANGE. For a short while they held hands in silence and then parted their ways forever.<\/strong>
\nSuch a long time he regretted not to have kissed her at least one single time tenderly on her forehead.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ORANGE<\/strong> though and her picture survived the war with him. This fruit dehydrated completely in his luggage and became as light as a ping pong ball.<\/p>\n

In the 50ies,<\/strong> his children used to play with “FAN\u00cdTSAS<\/span> ORANGE<\/span>“,<\/strong> far away from her in Tyrol, and so she remained alive in his family throughout all those years.<\/p>\n

JULIUS<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n

47 years later, in 1990,<\/strong> Julius spent a vacation with his wife on the island. (See his foto!) There he tried to find Fan\u00edtsa by showing her picture around…and really! did he get her address:
\nMarried to a Greek named LATHOUR\u00c1KIS<\/span><\/strong>, living in Union City, New Jersey!
\nSo he left also his address to be sent to her…<\/strong>
\nTwo years later, on the 4th of March 1992,<\/strong> Julius let me know, that Fan\u00edtsa<\/span> had written to him already several times. “Just yesterday a letter arrived!”.<\/strong>
\nI’m so happy that their tender story ended this way, and I’m grateful to him for having shared it!<\/p>\n

Julius Thaler died on the 1st of February 2010, 90 years old, as a retired school inspector. May he rest in peace! Kal\u00f3 par\u00e1deiso na \u00e9chei!<\/strong><\/p>\n
