A Century Later, a Karpathian American Searches for his Roots<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Emanuel John Stamatakis, one of the first Karpathian immigrants, came to America in 1903 and got a job at Allegheny company coal mine at Canonsburg Pa. Fortunately, he did not have to dig 16 tons of coal a day like the other miners because he worked as a carpenter. He used large beams to prevent the coal-mining roof from collapsing.<\/p>\n

After a few years, he returned to Karpathos, where he stayed for a year and married Vangela Alexiades before returning to America. He made two more trips, and in 1916, he brought his wife, five year old son John, and his two-year-old daughter Zoe to Garwood, Wheeling WV, where he worked at the Constanza Brothers coal mine. They were among the first young Carpathians to emigrate to America, and their brother Nick was one of the first Carpathians born in America. John was one of the first Karpathian children to attend American school.<\/p>\n

Suddenly, in 1925, Vangela died, and next year, Emanuel Stamatakis went to Karpathos and remarried. John stayed in America at Wheeling with his uncle, Haizmanolis Alexiadis, who took care of his education and career. Later, he moved to New York where were better job opportunities. In 1932 he visited Karpathos and reunited with the island and relatives he left 16 years earlier, and was familiar with narratives he heard from his parents and relatives.<\/p>\n

In 1936 John Stamatakis married Katherine Tucker with whom he had four sons: John junior, Thomas, Steve, and Edward. In 1946, he moved to Albany, the capital of the State of New York, and in 1950 he bought a tourist establishment at Freehold NY, which included a hotel with a restaurant, swimming pool and an area of \u200b\u200b200 acres. At the same time, through his brother, sister, other relatives, and the Carpathian associations, he kept in touch with Karpathos and the Karpathian community. At the same time, he emphasized to his children and grandchildren’s their Karpathian heritage with narratives. In 1988, the second and last time he visited Karpathos, he said goodbye to his relatives and the place he was born.<\/p>\n

Many times, John Stamatakis’s children expressed their desire to visit Karpathos, to know their relatives and the place where their grandparents and their father were born. In 1988, Thomas achieved his desire, and this year, Edward’s turn came along with his wife, who, after retirement, enjoyed hiking in the mountains here in America and other countries. This year, their program was set for Greece, with visits to Meteora, Cyclades and Karpathos!<\/p>\n

On March 10, Edward and Emma arrived in Karpathos, where their cousins\u00a0 Angie and Elli, who knew them from America, waited for them. The house where their father was born did not exist anymore, a new house was built in its place. But they were given the opportunity to sleep in the same room where his parents slept when they visited Karpathos in 1988.<\/p>\n

Their first wish was to visit the small church of Vangelistra, where his grandfather and father were baptized. The small church was no more, and a new, magnificent church was built in its place, serving the present ecclesiastical needs of the island’s capital. But they found the “baptistira” in which his grandfather and father were baptized and the icon of the Annunciation, which his grandparents worshiped. They prayed and lit a candle in their memory. Immediately after, their steps led to the cemetery to visit and worship at their aunt Julia Stamatakis-Kassiotis’ grave, remembering the conversation of the three siblings (John, Julia, and Nick) when they talked about their childhood memories.<\/p>\n

The next morning they visited “Anemomilous”, the neighborhood where his grandfather was born and raised. Homes from that time period still existed there. In the same neighborhood they passed and from the house where his grandfather lived with his second wife Maria Konstantinidis-Stamatakis. In the afternoon, they visited the chapels where his grandparents worshiped: Agia Kyriaki, Larniotissa, and Zoodohos Pigi.<\/p>\n

The following day, with the company of Evangelia Agapiou, who organized their journey to Karpathos, they and their cousins \u200b\u200bvisited the villages of South Karpathos. They started from Aperi, the native village of his grandmother. They stood at the Cathedral of the Assumption and admired the wood-carved icon set made by his great-great-grandfather Emanuel Matsakis. He felt the same excited feeling when he visited the nearby Gymnasium building, and among the donors posted on the wall was listed his father’s name. The route continued through the other villages: Volada, Othos, Pylles, Foiniki, Arkasa, and Menetes. Overlooking a verdant valley that reached the beach of “Vrondis”, they enjoyed a traditional meal in Othos and later they had their coffee in a traditional caf\u00e9 at Foiniki by the sea. In Arkasa they visited the chapel of Hagia Sophia, and admired the Mosaics of the basilica of Saint Anastasia. In Menetes, they visited the central church and, in awe, they overlooked the cliff at the back of the church. Many times, they had heard his father talking about the “child of the Virgin” and the miracle that saved the boy from the cliff.<\/p>\n

In the following days, they walked on paths from the southern to the northernmost end of the island. In some places, like Pei, the path passes over the backbone of Karpathos, and from the same place, you can see the sunrise and the sunset. During the journey, they spent the night in Pyles, Mesochori, and Olympus in traditional houses. Before their departure, they returned to their cousins \u200b\u200bin Pigadia, where they met other relatives. They came to bid farewell with flowers and traditional sweets, as was the case a century ago, when his grandmother and father left for their long journey. Both Edward and Emma were thrilled by the pilgrimage trip to Karpathos, and they plan to return in September and the following year to have a Stamatakis family reunion.<\/p>\n
