Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos – Philanthropy and the Kisthinios Family Legacy
Honouring the Legacy of Dr. Nikolaos Kisthinios Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos continues a family legacy associated with medicine, education and service to the island of Megisti Kastellorizo or Kisthini The “Nikolopoulos Kisthinios family is also related to the Saxtouris Kriezis family” which represents prominent historical Greek families—most notably hailing from Hydra and the Kastellorizp.
The family members included revolutionarα naval commanders, prime ministers, vice presidents, generals and notable figures of the Greek War of Independence (such as Admiral Georgios Sachtouris and Prime Minister Antonios Kriezis).

He is the grandgrandson of Emmanuel Kisthinios from Kisthini and the grandson of Dr. Nikolaos Ioannis Kisthinios (1897–1940), through his mother, Ms. Aggeliki Kisthiniou Nikolopoulou. Dr. Nikolaos Kisthinios is remembered by the family as a distinguished physician and cardiologist with a connection to the historic Kisthinios family and Kastellorizo.
In the past, the family donated: GEORGIOS SAXTOURIS GUNS, PORTRAIT OF ADMIRAL ANTONIOS SAXTOURIS AND 10 TH PRIME MINISTER ANTONIOS KRIEZIS AT THE NATIONAL HISTORICAL MUSEUM – OLD PARLIAMENT HOUSE (NHM), HYDRA JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, HYDRA OLD PEOPLES HOME AND NURSING HOME.
In June 2023 the family donated the FULL PORTRAIT OF ADMIRAL ANTONIOS SAXTOURIS AT THE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES MUSEUM OF HYDRA (IAMY), WITH FAMILY HEIRLOOMS.
In August 2026, this family connection was commemorated through two important philanthropic initiatives benefiting the people and future generations of Kastellorizo.

Donation to the Medical Centre of Megisti
On 9 August 2026, an upgrade of the medical ultrasound system at the Medical Centre of Megisti (Kastellorizo) was generously donated by Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos, on behalf of the Nikolopoulou–Kisthinios family.
The donation was made in memory of Dr. Nikolaos Kisthinios (1897–1940) and contributes to the improvement of diagnostic capabilities and healthcare services available to the local community.

The “Emmanouil & Nikolaos Kisthinios” Excellence Sponsorship – Scholarship
Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos also established the “Emmanouil & Nikolaos Kisthinios” Excellence Sponsorship – Scholarship in honour of his family’s historical connection with Kastellorizo.
The scholarship is addressed exclusively to graduating high-school students of Kastellorizo. Its purpose is to provide financial support to an eligible student who achieves admission to a Higher Education Institution through the 2026 Panhellenic Examinations.
Through this initiative, the scholarship seeks to encourage academic excellence and support young people from Kastellorizo as they begin their university education.

1. Family Legacy and Heritage
The statue of Emmanuel Kisthinios the sculpture was fully funded by his Grandgrandson Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos, a distinguished podiatrist based in Greece and Cyprus. Dr. Nikolopoulos is a direct descendant of Emmanuel Kisthinios. He carries a profound historical legacy, with family roots connecting him directly to core figures of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, including the historic Kisthinios, Sachtouris, and Kriezis families

The Sculpture:
Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos commissioned and fully financed the creation of the Emmanuel Kisthinios statue, sculpted by the renowned contemporary artist Marcos Marin.
The Royal Signature:
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco officially signed the historic family archive of the Kisthinios – Nikolopoulos – Sachtouris – Kriezis lineage, cementing its international and historical significance.The Philhellene Award: In recognition of his exceptional cultural contribution and efforts to strengthen international ties, Dr. Christos Nikolopoulos was honored with the prestigious “Philhellene Award”.

3. The Homecoming and Dedication Ceremony
Following its international debut, the monument traveled to its permanent home on the frontier island of Greece:
The Unveiling:
On August 9, 2026, the official unveiling ceremony took place at the harbor of Kastellorizo, the birthplace of Emmanuel Kisthinios.
The Ceremony:
The unveiling was performed by Vassilis Ypsilantis (1st Dean of the Hellenic Parliament), in the presence of local authorities, military representatives, and the island’s residents.
The Location:
The statue stands prominently at the port of Kastellorizo, serving as a permanent beacon of history, education, and the strong cultural bridge built between Monaco and Greece.
